Kristina comes from a proud background of field California pickers and the first in her family to attend college. Kristina is married to Jose Vergara and is the mother of four boys: Figo, Tlaloc, Quetzalcoatl, and Yaotl. Kristina has worked for 12 years at Bay Area Women Against Rape, the nation’s first rape crisis center, building and creating safe environments for women, men, children, immigrants and the LGBTQIQPAA+ communities to heal and thrive after a sexual assault experience. As survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, Kristina believes firmly in supporting programs that can help women, men, and children move forward from abusive relationships and receive justice from gender violent work environments.
Kristina wants to bring to the political platform issues faced by her community members in all developmental life stages such as quality hospice care for Oakland residents with life-limiting illnesses, zero cost daycare for single-parent run households, equal pay, full-pay maternity leave, recovery clinics for community members suffering from substance abuse disorders, holistic centers for our mentally ill, quality retirement homes that do not interrupt social connections, roundtables to give political voice to ageism and its dire and mortal effects on the elderly, schools -k-12- for children with learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, emotional and behavioral disorders, and physical and developmental disabilities, cultural centers that deal with Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome endured by African Americans, and many other social issues that clearly hinder Oaklanders’ constitutional right to live a happy life. Kristina believes that the mistake so often made by Councilmembers on behalf of Oakland is the belief that economic development is the only venue to move Oakland forward, when in realty what is keeping community residents from achieving financial independence is the lack of resources to deal effectively with problems caused by stratification. As Council Member of District 7, Kristina is committed to use financial and campaign resources to help Oaklanders in their journey to self actualization, community healing and empowerment.
