She was appointed last December by Councilmember Jesse Arreguin and elected as Chair in January, the Commission has since revived the “Outstanding Women of Berkeley” awards and gave recognition to eleven truly amazing Berkeley women at their packed April event. Next year the Commission will be addressing a significant policy issue affecting women in our community. As a founding Board member of the M3 Education Foundation, Sophie is very active in helping this “start-up” not-for-profit grow and develop. M3’s mission is to enable young black men to achieve their highest potential. This is work to which Sophie is deeply committed. In the schools she has continued to be very active, last year as President and this year as Outreach Coordinator for the King PTA. Sophie also serves on the King School Governance Council where a group of elected parents and teachers create strategic plans and monitor success. This is their first year of implementing a School Plan she helped develop with the central theme of eliminating the achievement gap. Just recently the Berkeley Public Library Foundation invited her to chair the Northbrae Library Committee of the Branch Library Fundraising Campaign, which will be getting underway in the next few months. Sophie was appointed last Spring to the Board of the State Democratic Party Executive Committee’s Science and Technology Caucus. They are working to ensure that all Democratic candidates are up-to-date on the latest technologies for campaigns and communications. She has also filled in on the Zoning Adjustments Board and Planning Commission from time to time. Sophie also remain active with Planned Parenthood Shasta Diablo as leader of a Board Alumni group, supporting the organization through policy, fundraising and advocacy. Sophie is the mother of three children ages 11, 13 and 15.
