An experienced public policy professional, Kiyomi was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. as an Assistant Secretary at the California Health and Human Services Agency in December 2011. Previously, she worked in the California State Senate where she served as Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg’s chief advisor on criminal justice, judicial branch, housing, mental health, and veterans issues. Kiyomi first began working in the Legislature as a California Senate Fellow.
Kiyomi is a tireless community leader. She has served as President of the Asian Pacific Islander Capitol Association, an association of Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) legislative staff and public affairs professionals, and remains an active member. A co-founder of the New Leaders Council, Sacramento Chapter, she continues to support its work to train the next generation of progressive leaders. She also volunteers her time as an Advisory Board Member for My Sister’s House, the Central Valley’s only domestic violence shelter that uniquely meets the needs of APIA women and children.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and her Master of Public Administration degree from USC’s Price School of Public Policy.
