As a School Board member, Kim-Shree has worked diligently to foster an environment focused on leading by example. She often spends her own lunch hour meeting with parents and teachers. And she led the effort to make it policy that each School Board member visit a minimum of twenty schools a year, a practice she had been practicing from the start. Kim-Shree also aims to create more diversely balanced school districts and classrooms by implementing a student assignment system that would allow students to choose which school they attend. The San Francisco School Board is known for being particularly contentious. As the first African-American elected to the School Board in ten years, Kim-Shree has made it a priority to change this dynamic. She believes that the work of elected officials is to communicate effectively with each other – no matter how different the opinions. As a member of the San Francisco School Board Kim-Shree works hard to set an example for the 55,000 children and their parents that depend on her, emphasizing that “how elected officials behave in the smallest matters is noticed and is hence of the utmost importance.” Emerge taught her that you must be genuinely open to others’ perspectives to help create policy that is representative of many different ideas and opinions. To find out more about Kim-Shree Maufus and the great things she is doing in her city and community, go to: www.sfusd.edu
