I am a stage manager by trade, and have spent a career helping others manifest vision into reality through my strong work ethic and spirit of creative problem solving. I have become an expert on nonprofit management, development and infrastructure.
Last year, I ran for school board. Like most Latinos I know, my family has modeled a lifetime of service through church, school and our wider community. I ran because I have served on my daughter’s school on PTA for a few years and could see that our district has some inequities that, left unaddressed, will grow. I decided that I could make a difference and I ran.
What I learned about myself was just how deeply rooted education is in my family and how education has helped my family to gain a tremendous amount of privilege in a short period of time. This isn’t just the dream of Latinos or of immigrants, it is the American dream of opportunity and in order for our society to flourish it has to be available for all of us.
