Read moreHeather began her service on the Oakland Youth Advisory Commission in January of 2008. Before her appointment, she had played an active role in the labor movement for several years. She currently works as an Education Coordinator with the Service Employees International Union – United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW), where she works to empower healthcare workers through education and training. Prior to taking this job, she worked in San Diego for SEIU Local 2028.During college, Heather volunteered as a youth organizer with the National Conference for Community and Justice to open the eyes of young people to social injustices. After graduate school, she worked as a social worker at an adolescent group home to help young girls reunite with their families.Heather earned her B.A. in Sociology from the University of South Florida in Tampa and her M.A. from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration.
