She then followed her fashion dreams to New York City, where she did everything from merchandising to fashion styling and freelance writing. Her last NYC adventure as a style consultant at an upscale bridal boutique gave her enough stories for a novel. You are probably waiting for the political connection, right? Well, her volunteer work with a congressional campaign in Brooklyn sparked a more serious interest in politics. A 2008 trip to the DNC cemented her decision to shift careers. Her top policy interests generally concern women including gender parity in politics, reproductive rights and domestic violence. She is also interested in finding creative ways for faith-based and secular groups to collaboratively address social problems. She is now the Director of Programs for IGNITE, a nonprofit that delivers political and civic engagement education to young women in high school and college. Outside of work, her ideas of a good time include, a night at a concert/theater/ballet, a sweat-inducing dance class or watching Fox News just for laughs. Fatimah holds a Master’s in Public Policy from UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy. She plans to run for office one day soon and encourage other young women to do the same.
