Her range of skills and experience include working as an engineer, community organizer, education policy analyst, nonprofit manager, and foundation president. Soon after college she joined AmeriCorps*VISTA as a community organizer, launching tutoring programs and connecting parents who didn’t speak English with their children’s schools. She moved to Seattle to work for the League of Education Voters, organizing parents across the state to improve statewide funding for public schools, and designed a weighted formula of how the dollars of Initiative 884 would be distributed to K-12 school districts. After moving back to California, she led a successful reading program for struggling students, and as President of her children’s elementary school parent group, she led a coalition with the city and neighborhood to create safe routes for kids to walk and bike to school. In 2017 she founded and became President of a new districtwide nonprofit education foundation for the Mt Diablo School District.
Cherise holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Washington with a focus in Education Policy and Nonprofit Management. Cherise and her husband Sandy live in Walnut Creek with their two children who are students in the Mt Diablo public schools.
